Safety Starts at the Cell Level: The Bicycle Motor Works Difference
Trusted cells. Thoughtful engineering. Powerful possibilities.

A better ride begins before you turn on your eBike. It begins with the decisions made inside its battery.
At Bicycle Motor Works, we hand-build our eBike battery packs in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, using genuine cells from trusted manufacturers. Since our founding in 2014, our focus has been on high-quality components, careful assembly, and supporting the riders and builders who use our products.
Our guiding principle is simple: Safety starts at the cell level—but it does not stop there. The cells, battery management system, electrical connections, enclosure, charger, and eBike must work together as a compatible system. Battery safety depends on that complete picture, not a single component or specification.
Here is how that approach shapes our batteries—and the benefits it brings to your next build.
Trusted Cell Brands, Backed by Information You Can Review
Knowing what is inside your battery should not be a guessing game.

Bicycle Motor Works offers batteries built with cells from manufacturers including Molicel, Samsung, Ampace, Reliance, EVE, BAK, and LG. Our collections identify cell brands and models so riders can look beyond voltage and capacity when comparing their options.
That distinction matters because cell models have different characteristics. Manufacturer datasheets describe factors such as capacity, discharge current, charging requirements, temperature limits, and performance under specified test conditions. For example, Molicel publishes separate specifications and performance curves for its P45B and P50B cells—not one blanket specification for every Molicel product.
For riders, this means a more informed choice. Rather than selecting a battery solely because it has a familiar brand name or an impressive number on the label, you can consider how its particular cell model fits your riding needs.
Transparency is part of better battery selection.
What Manufacturer Specifications and UN 38.3 Testing Actually Tell You
Battery terminology can be confusing, especially when words such as “tested,” “certified,” and “high-performance” appear together.
A manufacturer datasheet describes a cell’s technical characteristics and operating conditions. It is useful engineering information, but it is not, by itself, proof of a separate safety certification. Molicel’s own datasheets also explain that their published information does not constitute a performance guarantee or product warranty.

A UN 38.3 test summary documents transportation-related testing for an identified cell or battery model. It includes information such as the manufacturer, test laboratory, report identification, and test results. UN 38.3 addresses transportation safety; it is not a certification of riding range or overall eBike performance.
Importantly, cell-level testing does not establish certification of the finished battery pack or complete eBike system. Those are separate levels of evaluation. Standards such as UL 2271 address batteries for light electric vehicle applications, while UL 2849 addresses eBike electrical systems.
Understanding those differences helps riders ask better questions—and keeps safety claims meaningful.
High-Current Battery Options for Demanding Builds

The right battery should match the demands of your eBike, not simply fit its frame.
Bicycle Motor Works specializes in high-current battery designs and offers configurations for performance-oriented motors and controllers.
Our selection process considers your motor, controller, riding style, and climate to help identify an appropriate battery configuration. This is particularly useful when planning a conversion or custom build. Your priorities might include sustained power delivery, a compact installation, more stored energy for longer rides, or a balance of all three.
The goal is not to choose the biggest number available. It is to choose a battery that suits the system you are building.
Compatibility matters more than a headline specification. A matching connector alone does not establish that a battery and charger are suitable for one another. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission specifically warns against assuming that “universal” chargers are safe for different micromobility products.
Copper Busbars: Attention to the Connections Inside
The cells are only part of the electrical path.
Bicycle Motor Works uses pure copper busbars in its battery construction, with the aim of reducing resistance in the connections that carry current through the pack.

Why does that matter? At the same current, lower connection resistance means less voltage drop and less heat generated in those connections. Conductor dimensions, joints, and operating temperature also matter; choosing a conductive material is one part of designing the current path properly.
These internal details may not be visible once the battery is enclosed, but they are worth considering when comparing how battery packs are built.
Battery Management—and More Insight With Bluetooth
A battery management system, or BMS, helps monitor and protect a battery within its designed operating limits. Depending on its design, it can monitor cell voltage, pack current, and temperature, and respond to conditions such as overvoltage, undervoltage, or excessive current.
Bicycle Motor Works offers packs with protection features including overcharge, over-discharge, and temperature protection. For riders who want more visibility, selected models feature the 100 Balance Active Balance Bluetooth BMS. These models provide smartphone access to information such as voltage, current, temperature, and estimated state of charge, along with active balancing functionality. Features vary by model.
That access gives interested riders more information than a basic charge indicator alone. It also makes battery monitoring part of the ownership experience—not just something hidden inside the enclosure.
Even with monitoring and protection features, proper charging remains essential. A BMS is not a substitute for using the correct charger and following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Battery Designs That Fit Different Bikes and Riding Goals
Not every bike has the same mounting space, and not every rider wants the same installation.

Our VersaFit design combines garolite structural shielding, industrial-grade padding, and a rubber shrink-wrapped exterior with sealed ports. It is designed for use with suitable cages, battery bags, or custom mounting arrangements. VersaFit is water-resistant—not waterproof.
For tighter spaces, TrimLine offers a reduced-footprint design with multiple cell and capacity options. It gives builders another way to approach compact mounting without assuming every bike needs a large enclosure.
Riders who prefer a locking case can explore Wedge and Super Shark configurations.
Wedge includes a lock and adjustable mounting cradle, while Super Shark offers a reinforced cradle and direct wiring within a larger locking enclosure. Always check the specific model’s dimensions and mounting requirements before ordering.
The benefit is choice: a battery installation can be planned around your frame, mounting preferences, and intended use rather than treated as an afterthought.
Balancing Range, Capacity, and Weight
A compact battery may suit a lightweight build, while a higher-energy pack may be a better starting point for longer rides. Neither is automatically the best choice for everyone.
Actual range depends on more than battery capacity. Rider and cargo weight, terrain, assistance level, speed, tire conditions, temperature, and battery age all influence the result. That is why a fixed mileage promise cannot describe every rider’s experience.
Think about your typical ride first: how far you travel, how much climbing you encounter, and how much weight you are comfortable carrying. Those answers make battery comparisons more useful.
Options for Riders Who Keep Going When Temperatures Drop

For year-round riders, weather belongs in the battery-selection conversation.
Bicycle Motor Works offers a Winter Performance collection that includes configurations using selected Molicel, Ampace, and Reliance cells, alongside copper busbars and multilayer pack protection.
However, winter-focused selection does not make a battery immune to cold. Lower temperatures can increase resistance and reduce available performance and range.
Planning for those changes is part of responsible winter riding.
It is also important to distinguish cold-weather riding from cold-weather charging. Cell datasheets can specify different temperature limits for charging and discharging. Follow the instructions for your complete battery pack rather than assuming that a cell’s low-temperature discharge rating permits charging under the same conditions.
U.S.-Based Craftsmanship and Support
There is value in knowing who built your battery—and having someone to contact when questions arise.

Bicycle Motor Works builds its packs in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with assembly, testing, and inspection forming part of the production process. We also provide support for battery selection, configuration, and installation questions.
Before choosing a pack, contact us. We'll ask you to tell us about your motor and controller, available mounting space, typical riding distance, and performance goals. That conversation helps turn a long list of specifications into a more practical decision.
Our purpose is not simply to offer more battery choices. It is to help riders understand those choices.
Safety Continues After the Battery Is Built
Good battery ownership matters just as much as thoughtful product selection.
Use the supplied or specifically approved charger, remain present while charging, and never charge while sleeping. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, avoid unauthorized modifications, and take batteries to an appropriate battery recycler or hazardous-waste collection facility—not household trash or general recycling. These are central recommendations from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
No battery should be treated as risk-free. Responsible handling is part of every ride.
