But a high-performance motor is only one part of the system.



Choosing the right battery can dramatically affect how your bike feels -

how much it weighs, where the battery fits, how far you can ride, and how much power is available when you accelerate or climb.

52V or 72V: Which Voltage Should You Choose?

The first decision is voltage.


52V = Balanced Performance

A 52V battery is an excellent choice for riders who want strong, responsive performance without adding unnecessary size or weight.

A 52V Photon Pro setup is well suited for everyday riding, trail riding, technical builds, and riders who want a balance between power, efficiency, range, and maneuverability.

Think of 52V as the performance all-rounder.

It delivers plenty of capability while making it easier to create a lighter, cleaner, and more versatile bike.


72V = Maximum Performance Potential

Step up to 72V when you're building around higher performance.

A 72V system is ideal for riders looking for stronger acceleration, greater high-voltage power potential, and a more aggressive Photon Pro setup.

For steep climbs, demanding off-road riding, heavier builds, or riders who simply want to take advantage of the Photon Pro's higher-voltage capabilities, 72V becomes the natural choice.

At the same amp-hour capacity, a 72V battery also stores more energy than a 52V battery, giving builders another way to increase the energy available to the system.


In simple terms:

52V = Balanced, lighter and versatile.72V = More aggressive, higher-voltage performance.


Next Question: Lightweight or Extended Range?

Ampace JP50 or Reliance RS50?

Now we get to the heart of the battery: the cells themselves.

For our highest-performance Photon Pro battery configurations, two of the most exciting options are the Ampace JP50 and Reliance RS50.

Both are premium 5.0Ah 21700 high-current lithium-ion cells designed for applications where conventional energy-focused cells may not provide the performance riders are looking for.


But there is a difference.

Ampace JP50: High Current Meets All-Around Performance

The Ampace JP50 is an excellent choice for riders looking for a combination of high-current capability, strong power delivery, thermal performance, and all-season versatility.

With a cell-level continuous discharge rating of up to 60A, the JP50 is designed for demanding applications while still providing 5.0Ah of capacity per cell.

That combination makes the JP50 particularly attractive for riders who want a battery capable of supporting demanding acceleration and climbing while maintaining useful energy density.

It is an excellent high-performance all-rounder.


Reliance RS50: Step Up the Current Capability

The Reliance RS50 moves even further toward high-current performance.

The RS50 also provides 5.0Ah capacity per cell, but with a cell-level continuous discharge capability of up to 70A.

That makes it especially attractive for riders building around demanding acceleration, steep climbs, high loads, and high-output systems.

If your priority is extracting the greatest current capability from a 5Ah cell platform, the RS50 becomes the performance-focused choice.

Both are serious cells. Your decision comes down to how aggressively you intend to use the

Build the Battery Around the Bike—Not the Other Way Around

One of the biggest mistakes in building a high-performance eBike is choosing a battery based entirely on the largest voltage or capacity available.

A better approach is to build the battery around the bike and the way you ride.

A lightweight trail rider may be happier with a compact 52V VersaFit or TrimLine configuration.

A rider looking for higher-voltage performance without carrying a large enclosure might prefer a 72V VersaFit.

A commuter or adventure rider who prioritizes range and secure mounting may prefer a higher-capacity locking Shark Series battery.

Both are 5Ah high-current 21700 cells. The JP50 offers strong all-around high-current performance, while the RS50 provides a higher published cell-level continuous discharge rating for more demanding builds.
